Dave and Richmond, the lovely boys behind the Galaxy's Greatest Fanzine (TM) ZARJAZ, asked me to do a five page Sláine strip for the latest issue -- they'd finally got the go ahead from Pat Mills, creator of Sláine, as well as Ro-Busters, ABC Warriors, Nemesis the Warlock, Marshall Law and many many other of my childhood (and adulthood) faves, to use his characters in their fanzine. Feckin' brilliant, I said. A whole mag devoted to Pat Mills worship! I couldn't wait to get fiddlin' with his Celtic creation...!

Being a HUGE fan of Mick McMahon, I decided to set my story in Sláine's early years when he and his dwarf companion Ukko were wandering Tir-na-Nog hustling for a buck. Sláine and Ukko, bombarded by a "weird" fire storm, take shelter in a village and become the willing victims of a spot of mistaken identity. Being a huge fan of Sláine, I couldn't resist writing and drawing a seven page strip, as opposed to the five page -- Dave was good enough to allow this gross indulgence.

ZARJAZ will be launched at the (sadly smaller than usual) Bristol Comic Expo in May, but here's a sneak preview of a couple of my pages, starting with my loose pencils for the title page...

Yikes -- by the way, I'd better say again, Sláine and all characters are very much © Rebellion, and Sláine is created by Pat Mills and Angie Kincaid. Phew.

...and the final inked and lettered title page... I tend to change panels and layouts as I ink...

And these are the pencils for page 5...

...followed by the inked (but unlettered) page.
